Stephen Bartlett Production at The Docking Station Studios

“It all starts with the song. A good song guides you as to where it wants to go and when you’re working with the right act, its a real privilege to be able to help them produce something that really showcases who they are.”

For Queensland producer Stephen Bartlett, the song is a canvas just waiting to have the colour added. With a unique sound, that shows an uncanny ability to bring the best out of a wide variety of genres, his work has quickly become critically acclaimed around Australia.

His new studio The Docking Station features Queensland’s only Neve 5316 console imported from New York and six acoustically designed recording spaces, making it one of the country’s best choices for world-class recording. The Neve console also provides a classic platform for mixing , which is fast becoming one of Stephen’s most sought-after services, bringing fresh ears and a world-class polish to recordings from both at home and around the world.

With a solid history as a guitarist and bassist including a grade 7 in jazz guitar and stints in a number of popular Brisbane bands, Bartlett started his career as a producer in late 2003. His work has transcended genre with critical acclaim for his work with the likes of The Winnie Coopers (Triple J high rotation), Hungry Kids of Hungary, The Red Paintings, Skinny Jean, Dead Day Sun, Another Day Down, Dextor’s Conscience (2x MusicOz awards), Re-enactment and Revel 8.

“As a mastering engineer who gets to hear a lot of work from many mix engineers, I can say I rate Stephen highly. He has a great grasp over a variety of genres and is one of the most enthusiastic and passionate people I have the pleasure to work with. His level of commitment to his craft and clients is fantastic”

- Jack the Bear – Mastering Engineer (Vic)

“Working with Steve is easy. He puts in 100% of his effort, takes as much creative control as you want him to, he’s fluent with all his great gear and he’s absolutely affable. It seems that he’s always evolving his equipment and methods, which is something that I think is vital to people in his field. I think Steve’s a true professional.”

- Shem Allen – Skinny Jean

“Steve is one of the few sound engineers I’ve worked with that has both an undeniable ability matched with a warm and hard working enthusiasm. From experience I know that he’s up for going to some pretty obscure lengths to achieve those rare sounds we all desperately hunt for. That kind of creative and adventurous quality, I think, every good sound engineer should have. With his studio, Steve understands and has acutely taken care of any detail that will lead to a quality recording done in a comfortable and non-threatening environment…again, a rare trait in professional studios.”

- Jacob Hicks – Re:Enactment

“We hire Steve to work on our projects not only because of his track record but because he has innovative ideas and is prepared to give anything a go to achieve a unique sound that compliments the direction the band is pursuing. We are more than happy with the work that Stephen has done for us and would recommend him to anyone looking to achieve a quality recorded product.”

- Brett Wood – Starving Kids Records

“Steve’s easy to work with because he’s enthusiastic about your songs and listens to what you want to achieve with them and does his best to bring them to that outcome. He’s very experienced in music and studio stuff, so his skills and ideas help me to achieve things that would be impossible alone.”

- Karl Gadd – Singer/Songwriter

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, all these comments are great. Stephen is the best, we got it. Of course, how could anyone maintain such a studio without all these nice qualities? Yes but NO. For me, what matters the most in a recording, mixing, editing, mastering, producing, you-name-it-ing engineer, is the personal attitude. It does not matter how many degrees you have and who you have worked with and carefully listed in your credits. Stephen has one up all the others in Australia. He simply intuitively knows how to deal with people.”

- Daniel Fournier – Digital Archives Network

With over ten years experience mixing all kinds of genres, Stephen Bartlett can bring the professional sheen that your recording needs. The Docking Station Launches 2011 Sampler

The Docking Station is proud to launch our 2011 production sampler to celebrate the end of our first full year of operation.

The sampler includes artists who have recorded and/or mixed at Brisbane’s fastest growing studio facility over the last twelve months including Drawn From Bees, Epithets, Loren, Re:Enactment, Mr Maps and more.

“The sampler represents only a small selection of the albums I’ve had the pleasure of working with this year,” said producer Stephen Bartlett, “It has been one of the most creative years I’ve had with an amazing array of artists through our doors. With some great artists already locked in for 2012 and some great albums I’ve worked on but that have yet to be released this year, I am looking forward to a fantastic summer of great music!”.

The Docking Station opened in November 2010 featuring Queensland’s only vintage Neve 5316 console and has quickly grown its equipment list throughout the year, boasting an impressive collection of mics, instruments, tape machines and monitors designed to assist Stephen Bartlett bring out a signature sound.

The sampler is available for a limited time only.

Skinny Jean Hit The Docking Station!

The last month has been a very special time for us here at The Docking Station. We have been consumed with the creation of the sophomore album for Brisbane’s Skinny Jean. We thought it appropriate that we bring you some thoughts from Stephen Bartlett and the band on how the sessions are progressing and the excitement in the air about what they are creating. The band will remain in the studio for another few weeks. We are currently booking the rest of 2011 with limited days remaining in late September and October. Be sure to get in contact to book your project now at bookings@stephenbartlettproduction.com.

STEPHEN BARTLETT:
I’ve spent most of my life searching for a sound. It’s driven me crazy. It’s lead me to build studios, to hunt classic mics, to ship QLD’s only neve desk over from NY. It’s kept me awake at night. That day, earlier this year that I turned on the Studer and tied it to the Neve, I heard it.

I’ve always felt that limitations are at the heart of creativity and when I found myself with an impeccably-kept 8-track Studer, I had a desire not to return to the computer. I approached Skinny Jean about trying to do their record only to tape and they challenged me to it. We had worked together on their previous album and I knew that this band had it in them to push the barriers of modern sound and the process we’ve been through has been nothing short of career affirming, both for the band and myself.

We have been approaching it just like the Beatles did with Sgt Peppers, or the Beach Boys did with Pet Sounds. We mic things up in the room, through to the Neve, then I sub mix down with my outboard comp’s eq’s and fx including verb and the Kaoss pad through 8 channels and track that straight onto tape.  We can then mix those tracks back through the Neve and any more fx/eq we desire and record them down to a 1/4 inch Otari MTR 12 (stereo mix).  That then gets bounced back to track 1 & 2 on the 8 track, giving us 6 more tracks to use for overdubs and extra instruments before sub-mixing back down again. Without the combination of the two tape machines, or a great 8 buss classic console like the neve we wouldn’t even be able to consider this. It’s about using the very best in analogue equipment to create a purity and realism to the sound that you simply can’t achieve with digital trickery.

The limitations have been profitable. They’ve forced commitment at every stage; from live mixing to the tracks during tracking, to all-hands-on-deck manual automation during the mixdown stage, where sometimes three of us are on the console running automations during a mix to ensure we get the mix we want. It’s all manual, all human. When we complete the record, we’re sending the tapes for direct mastering to vinyl. If you so choose to purchase the record on vinyl, you’ll be holding in your hands a piece of art that has NEVER touched digital.

The guys have brought out their best performances. In a world without pro-tools, you don’t have a choice! It’s made us look at the music differently. It makes every aspect of recording more creative and places higher emphasis on musicality. It has felt so right and musical at every single stage. Every live performer has had those moments where they’ve come off stage and just know that there’s something electric, organic and special about a moment that happened on stage. This process has been about capturing musical magic and in turn has provided us all with one of the most amazing musical experiences of our lives.

For producers, our life goal is to create and refine “our sound”. For me, the journey of the last few years building the studio and refining my equipment has lead me to a place where I can hear it. Whether projects go to an analogue extreme as we have with Skinny Jean or whether we want the hybrid benefits of the Neve, tape AND protools, it’s renewed me with a new sense of discovery for every project coming….

SHEM ALLEN (SKINNY JEAN):

It’s been a while since we’ve recorded anything but we’re returning with an LP in the not too distant future.

Skinny Jean is passionate about making high quality music (not to mention poppy art-wank). Music worthy of a wide audience’s adulation, in our opinion, is challenging; interesting; well-thought-out and rich in tonal colour. To facilitate a high quality result Steve tendered the idea that we do this 100% analogue. We were (as you can imagine) apprehensive until Steve showed us the Neve & Studer combo.

That s**t fatality’d us. Our songs are going straight to tape, then straight to vinyl. The tones are unbelievable. The psychological effect of recording to something physical makes sure our takes aren’t ever half-arsed. We wanted quality, and this setup (and of course working with Steve) has delivered that and so much more. We’ve got the same time constraints and the same costs as recording the album into Protools but we’ve got something that makes us much happier.

SKINNY JEAN’S ALBUM IS SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE THIS SUMMER.

July News

Well the end of the financial year has come and gone and we’re headlong into the next. We have some great projects finishing off and Skinny Jean are about to lay down their sure-to-be-amazing sophomore album over the next couple of months. We’re pleased to announce that we’re now booked solid until September, so be sure to contact us soon for any projects you are hoping to lock away this side of Christmas. We’ve also had the pleasure of mixing the new Drawn From Bees single “Of Walls and Teeth” which you’ll be hearing soon no doubt.

We’re also stoked with the success of our clients in the Queensland Music Awards with two finalists and five highly commendeds including Nova Scotia, Liam Griffin, Mr Maps, Re:Enactment and Lion Island. It should be a fantastic night in the Queensland music industry calendar and we’ll be cheering on our mates! Check out some of them as we focus on some new releases from clients below. The Docking Station will have a table on the awards night, so if you’re interested in joining us for some mischief, drop us a line!

We’ve also broken in our new tape machines with our first album being mixed down to tape with spectacular results. Keep an eye out for the new Big Strong Brute album coming later in the year and you can be sure there will be plenty more analogue gems given the amazing sounds the Neve / Tape combination is producing. Drop us a line to make a time to come by and hear the difference the combination could make to your recording soon.

June News

JUNE NEWSLETTER

It’s been a busy month with Steve spending the early part of last month mountaineering in New Zealand. It’s a tough life! Returning to the studio for great stuff like Glenn Esmond’s Family of Strangers, Big Strong Brute and a yet to be unveiled X Factor contestant, has made “work” a little more bearable!

We’re also excited to announce that over the coming months Steve will be be working on the new album from one of our favourite Australian bands Skinny Jean. It was a pleasure to work with them on their critically acclaimed debut “Dolce Doggerel” and we’re excited to take experimenting with production to the next level with these guys.

We’re putting the finishing touches on our roster for the next few months, so if you have a project you’d like to discuss, be sure to contact us now!

NEW GEAR
One more piece of gear before the end of financial year. This month sees the addition of a Studer A80 mk2 tape machine, the last great transformer tape machine from Studer! It’s the perfect compliment the Neve console and is the last piece of the puzzle to provide a pure analog option for clients.

April News

April is yet another busy month here at The Docking Station with some more projects coming to an end and a couple of weeks off over Easter for us. We’ve had some great reviews come through as recordings we’ve done over the last six months have been starting to see the light of day. There are two great reviews of the Nova Scotia and Mr Maps that have appeared in Mess and Noise and there’s been some great vibes coming through from blogs around the world after Mr Maps’ inclusion on the recent Sounds Like Brisbane compilation. With releases from Lion Island, Re:Enactment, Loren and more hitting in the next few months, we’re looking forward to watching our releases take full flight.

NEW GEAR!

This month’s new toy is our new pair of B&W 805 signature monitors. They are the same monitors used by Steve Albini and the choice of monitors for Abbey Road. Music never sounded so good and there’s nothing better to ensure every nuance of your recording is attended to during your sessions here at The Docking Station. Sometimes they are so detailed it feels like cheating!

HELPING OUT!

With the floods here earlier in the year, we thought we knew what a disaster was and then the tragegy in Japan happened. Steve has been assisting some artists in a great initiative called SoundCrane to help the victims of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami. With contributors like Lawrence English, The Boat People and Hunz, the project is creating a great compilation of artists covering Japanese compositions. Check out all the details here.

BOOK NOW!

With Bartlett in New Zealand and Greenie in Europe, Easter’s going to be quiet at The Docking Station, but we’ll be back in early of May with A Family of Strangers (Glenn Esmond from The Butterfly Effect) and we’ve still got a couple of sessions available in May/June, but be sure to book with us before Easter. We’ll still be taking bookings while we’re relaxing over Easter with the talented Dan Lewis from SGC manning the phones, but get in early to discuss your project with Steve. Drop us a line now at bookings@stephenbartlettproduction.com or call 07 3191 1385.

March News

Well it's certainly been another killer month here at The Docking Station. With almost no days off in a whole month it's been solid recording and mixing with artists such as Loren, Re:enactment, Epithets and Alphabeticus. And April isn't about to slow down either with some new projects beginning and some we've been working on for the last few months getting the finishing touches. The Neve is putting together some fantastic sounds and both tracking and mixing are benefiting. We've been open six months now and are really hitting our stride, so be sure to come and check out the studio if you haven't been out to see us yet!

NEW GEAR!

The Docking Station continues to grow with two new pieces this month. Firstly, we're now sporting a brand new Bricasti M7 Reverb. Taking the world by storm of the last few years, the Bricasti m7 is quickly becoming the new standard in international studio reverbs. It's already adding something special to the mixing that's been going on all month. For more information, check out www.bricasti.com. Our second addition is to our instrument collection, a classic old-school Roland SH 101 synth. Been looking for that old school "runs on D cell batteries" sound? Think that midi is overrated? Sweet… This has all the analog class of 1982 with none of the "special features", making this the perfect piece to add the retro spark to your record. We've yet to use it on a track, but man it's been fun to play with!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Does that scare you? IT SHOULD. We're booking up May very quickly, so if you've been considering putting together a record this year and intend to get it out before Christmas, you're running quickly out of time! Don't leave it too late and have your album competing with the Christmas rush.

February News

Well it's certainly been a huge start to 2011. After recovering from the evacuation from the floods, we re-opened just a week later with even more improvements to the studio including adding some new shelving for our growing collection of instruments and more importantly, installing a Wii console with big screen projector! What recording session is complete without an ass whipping on Wii Sports?

NEW GEAR!

We have lots of new gear flowing into the studio. As well as the Wii and shelving, we had some time to go shopping! We have two new compressors now up and running- a JLM VOC 2, 2 channel Valve Optical Compressor in the vein of the famous Urei LA2A Tube compressors. It's great on Vocals, bass, and acoustic and a brilliant match with a 1176 for vocal chains. The second is a Chameleon Labs CL 7720 JLM modified mix bus compressor, perfect for mixing in the vein of the original G Series SSL bus Compressor but with a built in side chain high pass filter making it more appealing than the original. And there's more great news for studio nerds coming in the next couple of months!

REVIEWS

We've been hosting the amazing Loren over the last few weeks, recording an album that is shaping up to be absolutely fantastic. January also saw the release of some of the albums we worked on last year with some great reviews. The Courier Mail's Noel Mengel published an amazing review of Liam Griffin's new album last weekend, making special mention of Stephen's production as "world class". Meanwhile Mr Maps has been hitting the pavement with their new record Wire Empire with this great review from Andrew McMillen hitting Mess and Noise and a great launch over the weekend too. Congratulations also to Re:Enactment who recently got a 4/5 review on Triple J Unearthed from Steph Hughes. There's definitely something in the water here at the Docking Station and no, it's not the building anymore.

January News: BUSINESS AS USUAL

Well it’s been a manic 48 hours for us which has changed the content of this newsletter very significantly! For those that have been following on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll have seen the anxious wait we’ve had to see whether these terrible floods would put a new spin on the name “The Docking Station“. We’ve been to visit the studio today and are pleased to report that the studio has been saved by just inches. We’ve put some photos in this email for you to check out just how close we came! Our hearts also go out to our neighbouring businesses that weren’t quite so lucky to be built on stumps! We also have everyone else in Brisbane in our thoughts and hope that the last 48 hours have not treated you too badly. If you haven’t already, we’d also urge you to consider a donation to the Premier’s flood appeal if you are able.

We need to use this opportunity thank everyone who helped us move our gear….. to have moved an entire studio’s worth of gear including a 500kg neve console, a pool table and a grand piano in less than five hours is testament to the more than a dozen people that descended on the site. The good news is that once the water recedes, we’ll be back in business. Unfortunately Stephen Bartlett’s holiday that was due to start on Saturday has been cancelled, but we can confirm that the coming fortnight will see us have everything back ready for our next booking, so for those with studio time booked at any time in the future, rest assured you will not be affected.

It has certainly been a hugely challenging few days and will be a very busy couple of weeks as we re-assemble the studio. We appreciate all the offers of help and will be in touch if we think we need your assistance. Luckily, plugging in studio gear is a far easier job than scrubbing mud off gyprock walls so we think we should be ok. If there’s one thing this crisis has shown is how great the Brisbane community is and none moreso than our families and friends.

NOW FOR THE GOOD NEWS!

December and January have been fantastic to The Docking Station (well up till Tuesday!) and we’ve had the pleasure to work with some amazing artists. With Loren, Elktraks, Lion Island, Cam Milford and Re:enactment all laying down some great tunes the new facility has really hit it’s stride. It had also been about three months since we added new toys, so January has seen the addition of a new compressor and a couple of other new gadgets that are really coming in handy. The first releases from the new studio will start emerging in the coming months, so we’ll keep you up to date with how they go.

We’ve also been bowled over by forward bookings with an almost rock solid schedule through till late March. We still have a couple of sessions free, but if you are looking to record this side of April, please get in contact with us as soon as you can to ensure there are slots available.

Our office phone will be down until next week, however if you’d like to book some time or chat through your needs for your recording project, please call Stephen Green on 0412 321 368.

November News

The first full month in operation is behind us and we’re firing on all four cylinders at The Docking Station. Today we’re pleased to launch the new website…. check us out now at www.stephenbartlettproduction.com. You can check out all the juicy specs of the new studio and read more about what we’re up to and learn more about the history. And don’t forget to follow the Twitter feed @stephenbartlett

NEW PROJECTS

In October, the studio was filled with the sounds of Lion Island putting the finishing touches on their debut LP. The sessions yielded the first tracks that have been recorded entirely at the new facility on the Neve 5316 console and the quality of sound has blown everyone away…. even us! It was a long, but satisfying process that’s resulted in a great record. Our newly furnished chill out space helped the process and we’re looking forward to the band unleashing the album on the public. We’ve also had a couple of other great projects including a mixing job that’s currently on the go for a secret project that we’re stoked to be involved with….. but if I told you it wouldn’t be a secret would it?

STUDIO CHANGES

Since our last newsletter, the finishing touches on the studio have also been happening, with the pool table now pride of place next to the beer taps and our vinyl collection starting to grow. Anyone who’d like to donate any old vinyl, it would be much appreciated! We’re hoping to rectify the anemic state of the collection shortly. Our Beatles box set is doing the trick, but its time to grow! Our office-mates SGC Media have also recently acquired a music business book library that clients are enjoying getting their heads into. Anyone looking to learn more about promoting their release or read a great biography from an industry great, feel free to drop by and have a read!

SATURDAY SESSIONS

We also successfully held our first live Saturday session with Glenn Esmond (The Butterfly Effect) and his new band A Family of Strangers. We had around 40 people making use of the beer taps and checking out the band and recorded the live session through the Neve desk which will be used for bonus content later on. It was an amazing afternoon and we’re looking forward to making use of our main room space for more events like this. With our grand piano and huge chill out spaces, its a great place for an intimate gathering of friends and supporters, whether you’re recording the session or just using it as a launch afternoon.

BOOK NOW!

Bookings are coming in quickly, with a few weeks still available between now and March. Drop us a line to bookings@stephenbartlettproduction.com or call Stephen Green on 07 3191 1385 to discuss times that might suit you. Remember that 2011 is just around the corner and releasing in the first half of the year is always easier than dealing with the busy second half of the year, so if you’re considering an album or EP, now’s the time to start your planning. Feel free to send through your song ideas or demos as the earlier we can be involved in the process of feedback and pre-production, the better the product. Look forward to hearing from you!

The Docking Station Launches!

What was already a huge 2010 is even bigger! After working on some great albums from Mr Maps, Fushia, Re-Enactment, Toy Balloon, Nova Scotia, Lion Island and Liam Griffin earlier this year, I turned carpenter for six months to create our new pride and joy, THE DOCKING STATION here in Moorooka. We have imported Queensland’s only Neve 5316 desk and built what is I believe the best facility now available in Brisbane.

Over the last two weeks we’ve had Lion Island, Cam Milford and Sarah Collier all test out the new digs and we’ve had some amazing results that you’ll no doubt hear in the coming months. Now that the studio is open for business, its time to knuckle down and record some great albums.

To celebrate the launch, we are currently conducting free tours of the studio, so be sure to contact Stephen Green on bookings@stephenbartlettproduction.com or 07 3191 1385 to check it out. We have Brisbane’s best chill out area with a bar and three beers on tap, pool table and vinyl collection to while away the hours, so come on down and see us soon!
